First time in Alaska. We are renting a car. Can anyone tell me what they think about driving from Fairbanks to the Artic Circle without a pricey tour? It is 190 miles one way. I figure we can make the same stops at the same places....but not spend the 14-16 hours doing it. What is any one%26#39;s opinion on this?http://www.tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i6807-Circle_Tour_of_Central_Eastern.html
Self Driving to Artic Circle
If you want my honest opinion Linda Margaret, It is a waste of time. I took a Fly/Drive tour in August, and the best part of the trip was the Fly segment. Although it was overcast, we were still able to see a great aerial view of the Yukon River and pipeline.
Other than that, I could have better used the time and money.
First of all, there was nothing there other than a sign that stated ';Artoc Circle. There was no Welcome Center...nothing. Just miles and miles of unpaved road (which, by the way, you may be unable to take a rental car) and burned out forest. Take my advice and use your time in Fairbanks more productively than (unfortunately) I did.

Really, it%26#39;s just a sign. If you go up to to Coldfoot, mile 175, the have a nice visitor%26#39;s center. Here are pictures and story of my trip up the Dalton Hiway. Oh yea, previous poster is correct in that most rental car places will not allow you to take their cars there.

Darn, thought I caught it in time.
I would say it%26#39;s a nice drive, having done most of it, but rental agencies are really really picky about where you can take their cars, you may be able to find one or 2 agencies that allow unpaved roads, although my guess is you%26#39;d have to pay for extra coverage or something.
Hi Linda,
I drove the haul road (Dalton) for years as a truck driver. I personaly don,t think that the public should be on that road. It is VERY DANGEROUS and there is no help for miles. If you do decide to go get a C.B. Radio and let people know where you are going, There are pump stations along the way but they ara mile apart and there are alot of brown bear to be aware of.
Good Luck
Steve
