Hi there, we are going to Anchorage a few days in advance of a cruise. We%26#39;d like to take a tour up to McKinely for a couple of nights. Anyone have suggestions on what mode of transportation to take and where to stay up there as wel as tour companies that may specialize in such a thing?? Thank you.
Tours to Mt McKinley from Anchorage?
Hello blu, are you asking about visiting Denali National Park and Preserve or do you want to climb Mount McKinley? I don%26#39;t think climbing can be done in a short time.
If you are thinking about viewing Mount McKinley (20, 320 ft elevation) you could see this magnificent mountain from a several places in Anchorage on a clear day. As you are driving from Anchorage to Denali NP you could stop in Talkeetna and view it again. From there you could take a sightseeing flight over McKinley.
On the way to the entrance of the national park you%26#39;ll have many opportunities to see this magnificent mountain if the weather cooperates. After a stop in Talkeetna you can go to Denali NP entrance, book a place there for a couple of nights and take a shuttle bus into the park. This approach delivers endless opportunities to view McKinley but only if the weather is right.
You really do not need to go to Denali on any organized tours. Just rent a car and explore on your own. It is very easy to book your car rental, accommodations, flight seeing trip and a shuttle bus. Ask more questions here, I learned that many wonderful and knowledgeable posters on this board are always willing to help. When are you going?

Tours to Mt McKinley from Anchorage?
Hello blu-sadly our last few weeks have been so rainy I%26#39;d hate for you to plan a whole sidetrip around Mckinley, drive all the way up there ans not see a thing- which happends about 70% of the time-this time of year-But for sure go if it%26#39;s nice- other options are Portage Glacier visitors ctr-very fun and informative-Matanuska Glacier- you can walk right up onto it! Also Big Game wildlife refuge has bears moose elk caribou that roam open in a huge area but they feed the animals up at the front so they lure them in, not expensive and you can drive through or walk if weather allows! The native heritage museum is a great experience- the Zoo- Definitely try to get to Girdwood(Alyeska Mtn) if you can-appx 20 min drive from dwn town anch- great tram to top of mtn- great places to eat-Double Musky-The bake shopp-beware dont eat at alyeska hotel but do use their tram to go up have drinks at the 7 glacier bars and hike around spectacular view from everywhere up there! The drive from Anch is one of the prettiest I ve ever seen(ok mabye I%26#39;m playing favorites)to Girdwood-one side of the hwy is steep mtns(watch for Dahl sheep up on the cliffs) other side is turnagain arm(ocean) Dress warm and Layers layers layers!
Hello! If you would like to see Denali Park, rent a car, and drive up - it%26#39;s a nice drive, and the fall colors are incredible right now. We have actually had quite a lot of blue sky sunshine the past several days - which is more typical for the Interior of Alaska this time of year, though I can%26#39;t promise you clear weather. :) There are hotels near the Park entrance as well as here in Healy - I would recommend the Hotel Nordhaven here, and we have other B%26amp;B/cabin type accommodations as well. Any specifics?? Depends on when you will be here, but if the shuttle buses are still running, I would take one of those out in to the Park. www.nps.gov/dena. Happy travels! :)
