Bus to Kantishna Roadhouse?

We%26#39;re planning a trip to AK this summer and are hoping to spend a few days at the Kantishna Roadhouse. However, I have a back problem I have to watch. Has anyone taken the Kantishna Roadhouse bus lately? How are the seats on these things? If I have to sit in an airline seat that doesn%26#39;t recline at all for 4-5 hours, it can create problems. If I can be at a slightly reclined angle, I%26#39;m OK. They tell me that the seats on the bus don%26#39;t recline, but that they%26#39;re better than school bus seats. Are they set an angle that%26#39;s reclined even a little? Anybody have any recent experience? Thanks.

Hmmm they seem like regular school bus seats to me, they don%26#39;t recline. Perhaps you could put a back pack against the side of the bus and lean back on it.

Also, maybe consider flying to Kantishna, as least for one of the legs - maybe busride in, and fly out . . . .that might help. :)

Here%26#39;s the update on my experience. Got to Denali, and checked out the busses. In the busses I looked at, the seats were individual seats, not school-bus type bench seats. They%26#39;re not exactly ';bucket seats,'; but they are angled back slightly, as they should be. So the net result was that with the breaks every 1-1/2 hours or so, and the back brace I was wearing for insurance, they were OK for the whole ten hours. It was a great ride and Denali is absolutely spectacular. We went out about 60 miles (to Fish Creek) before turning around.

I did ask the bus driver before we got on about which seats were less bumpy, and there seemed to be general agreement that just behind the front wheels would be better than in the back of the bus.

Hi Earthman,

These buses have the most comfortable seats in the park. That does not mean that they recline or have special back support. It does mean that the bus has cushioned seats with head rests, better suspension and the time taken to get to your destination is broken up with frequent stops. A six hour ride means at least three chances to get off the bus to relax, walk and stretch. Other stops offer time to stand and move about on the bus as everyone is watching wildlife. If you are concerned about your comfort, try flying into/out from the lodge. This means forfeiting the time on the road while gaining speed and comfort.
