Skagway White Pass Railway/ But what is Liarsville?

We were in Skagway years ago and took the bus up the pass and then on to Carcross. We really enjoyed it, but want to take the train up this time. One tour (off the cruis ship) is railway up and back only at $106. pp.

For an extra $40. there is a so-called ';trail camp adventure'; at Liarsville. I don%26#39;t think this existed (a re-creation, they say) when we were in Skagway about 20 years ago. I%26#39;m thinking skip the extra cost for a ';re-creation'; and spend the extra time before or after the railway trip seeing the Park Service historical displays, etc.

Hello Skagway Local Expert...describe Liarsville and what you%26#39;d do if you were there for a day. Always appreciate the comments you%26#39;ve made in the TA posts on Skagway--but I%26#39;ve searched and can%26#39;t find anything on Liarsville. I%26#39;d rather spend the extra $40 times 2 on books, crafts or libations in Skagway if Liarsville is rather hokey.

We%26#39;re leaving Sunday, 7/9 so hope to hear, although this is hardly an earthshaking decision! lol

Thanks...

Skagway White Pass Railway/ But what is Liarsville?

Liarsville is a little re-created Stampeder Camp north of town. Skagway is all about Gold Rush history and one year in particular when all the gold rushers came to Skagway. Liarsville is a mock up of that time. They have a little outdoor theater set up for a fun show about the rush. I wouldn%26#39;t say hokey, but if you don%26#39;t have a flare for theatrics or an interest in the history of Skagway, you%26#39;ll probably not be overly impressed.

Since you bring up libations...a Skagway favorite....The Red Onion Saloon can be a fun time. One of the original bars from the Gold Rush, it often has live music during the day. You can pass a couple hours sucking down some regional beers. Boy....if I had a buck for every beer I consumed in that place.....scary.

Thanks quitou. I think we will take the RR without the Liarsville extra and spend the extra time in Skagway, where as I recall, there were excellent Park Service exhibitions about the Gold Rush. This is a follow-on to the Klondike History exhibit sponsored by the National Park Service here in Seattle, as the outfitters for the Klondike got their ';gold'; here selling to the stampeders!

Sorry I missed you on this one but at least you seem to have sorted this out for the best, anyway!?! The Park Service is a must do, and if you don%26#39;t find me in person while you are in town, please give us an overview of how your time in Skagway went when you get home. This is most important for future visitors. You will have a fresh view unskewed by time and local bias that our visitors need! Thank you in advance for your visit and input! DD

Hi linnmac,

I am looking for tour that will go up/down the pass by train or one way train and one way bus. The same tour offered by our cruise is a little expensive for our family of four ($175 per person). Your tour ($106 ) is a good deal. Do you mind to share where can I book the tour. Thanks.

The best way to do the train ride is to simply walk up from the ship about three blocks and book the train ride at the station! They have all of the options available right there at the station and they always have room, in spite of all of the sales pitches that you will hear on your way to the station, this is still the most economical and simple way to do it, as well as a chance to check the last minute weather conditions!?! DD

Thanks for the info, DD. How about the bus ride? After reading all the comments, I like the idea of taking the train up there and bus back.

Hi Forever,

I posed the same question to bdigfoot a month ago, and have yet to receive a response. In the interim, I booked the combo with the cruiseline.

Hi aquablue, I%26#39;ll on Princess. I don%26#39;t think they offer combo.

You may wish to revisit your cruiseship%26#39;s shore excursions. I looked at Princess%26#39; tours, and they DO offer the combination Yukon Expedition and White Pass RR (train and motorcoach) for $169.00 per person. This is SGY-H. Princess also offers the 3 hour train ride alone for $100.00. This is SGY-l. This is less expensive than some of the other cruiseliners. Celebrity wants $106.00 for the train, and $179.00 for the Yukon combo.

If we receive a reply from DD, perhaps we can both benefit from a less expensive price by booking independent of the cruiselines : - )

I am very sorry that I get so busy during the summer that I really can not keep up with this part of my existence, but I would like to humbly refer you all to my archives where I have already answered most of these queries and I quale at redundancy so, please review the archives and I think that all of the above will be answered therein!?! Your humble advisor stands by!?! caveat emptor DD
