Is there a car rental place in Barrow? I%26#39;ll only be there for the day with three kids, and I can%26#39;t afford the $60.00 tour (x 4 people)!

Alternately, does the tour have a children discount?

Approach the tour companies and ask if they offer a discount for a family. Also give them the ages so theyknow what they are dealing with! Asking costs nothing and may save a bundle.

Another alternative is to contact the cab companies and see if you can rent a cab for a few hours. Try to get a talkative native cabby if you can and have him take you to all of the outlying areas and sights, then walk around the town and the beach as you wish. There is a children%26#39;s playground you can%26#39;t miss if you head north toward Browerville, but try to keep some energy in the kids for walking the beach. Last time I walked along I got some great pictures of ancient whale bones being exposed by erosion, and a great look at classic permafrost (an ice wedge in this case)

Do not miss the new museum, and take the initiative to say hello first, you may get into some interesting conversations. Finally , have everyone at least touch the water (bring bathing suites if you want to dip in the Arctic Ocean) and taste the water. If you are used to southern sea water, this is notable for a minimal amount of salt in the cold water.
