Itinerary HELP, please!

First trip to AK for two couples from Deep South. We will arrive in Anchorage late July 28, tour the city on Friday. We made reservations with Alyeska Accomodations to spend weekend in Girdwood, plan day trips to Portage, Exit Glacier, Moose Pass and Seward. We hope the distance to Seward will not be too much of a hindrance. Your comments will help us priortize our time. Monday, August 1, we will travel via ferry from Whittier to Valdez, tour the area on 2nd and head towards Glennallen or maybe Delta Junction. Need info where to stay in either town and which would offer best accommodations /attractions? Mainly we don%26#39;t want to be shortsighted in making reservations between Valdez and Fairbanks where we will spend two days - two nights. Suggestions, please! Afterwards south to Denali National Park. Reading comments, it sounds like the all-day tour would be best but we will need a recommendation for a clean, comfortable hotel or lodge closeby. Eight hour in a bus will be enough driving. Should we plan on two days near Denali or move on to Talkeetna? Suggestions on tours or highlights? Also someone mentioned there a museum at Elmendorf AFB, what else can we do in this area? We want to move along as needed but don%26#39;t want to be overprogramed! Thanks for your guidance, the tips that I%26#39;ve read are super! Marrero2064

Itinerary HELP, please!

You should plan on two nights near denali. Talkeetna is too far away. Recommend you take shuttle bus in denali to at least Fish Creek, mile 63, or Wonder Lake, mile 85. Could be mosquitos at Wonder Lake, be prepared. There are tons of bnb%26#39;s, cabins, motels, lodges near denali, depending on what you want to spend. Search under denali np and Healy. We stayed at Denali Sourdough Cabins right outside of park, and at The Perch, about 9 miles south, next to Denali River Cabins. Both were basic accommodations and were fine. Especially if you get up really early for a shuttle tour. You could drive to Talkeetna after shuttle but next morning or day would be better. The dog sled tours at denali are at 10-2-4. New visitor center there. Check the denali website for more info on all.

Dear Ann:

Noticed one of your other queries on a different forum about Denali Suites and where to eat, so that is what I will share. Yes, Denali Suites is very nice - I know the people that own them - it%26#39;s very top notch!

If you are staying in Healy, dinner would be at the Black Diamond Grille - good food, and nice views. Avoid the Totem Inn. Also, for lunch, try the Lunch Box. Excellent take out - some really great meals. My favorite are the rice bowls - your choice of beef, chicken or shrimp. Very reasonable prices, too.

However, in the Denali area, there are many more restaurants to choose from for dinner. My personal favorites are as follows: Nenana Riverview Grill @ the McKinley Chalets, McKinley Creekside-casual, but very good food, and the Princess has good food, but not the variety that is available at the other places. A new restaurant called 229 Parks has just opened - lovely building, and good food, if you like a more organic type meal. Hope this helps some.

Hope you have a great trip!

Ann -hi, I hope your trip went well. Just wondering how your accommodations worked out with Alyeska accommodations, we are thinking of renting a chalet from them? Was it clean and decent? Were there screens on all the windows and did you have a mosquito problem? Was the area quiet?

thank you

Hi Ann
