Ist two weeks in September.....

We were planning our trip to Alaska the last week in Aug/1st week in Sept, but due to unforseen circumstances we have to change the plan. We now plan on coming to Alaska from the 3rd until 17th September 2007. I read a post before by coalminer about how the Denali area more a less closes up shop around the 12th..... So are we leaving it too late to come to visit? We planned on Anchorage, Denali, Homer %26amp; Seward as the main points of call. If we visited Denali and the Anchorage areas first and then down to the other two in the second week, would there still be a buzz around the place, things to do and places still open?

Any info would be very much appreciated

Welcome back Pez. Go to Denali in the beginning of your trip and then to Homer with overnight stop maybe in Talkeetna or Girdwood.

I wouldn%26#39;t worry about shops around Denali being closed but the road road inside the park will be officially closed around September 10-15.

Ist two weeks in September.....

Hello there! Yes, things do close up pretty quickly here - usually it%26#39;s the 15th for most businesses, but a bunch closed on the 12th this year. It%26#39;s varies - I probably won%26#39;t hear until towards the end of August when most closings will occur. There are a few that stay open past that time as well. The shuttle buses run for a set time, though that becomes dependent on the weather in Sept. - occasionally, an early snow will close the road for a day or so. However, the NPS has to keep the road open to a specific date for the businesses in the West End of the Park.

Also, if the weather remains good, the Park keeps the Park road open, and after the road lottery, then anyone can drive the road to the point where it%26#39;s closed - that%26#39;s kind of fun as well.

Anyhow, I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll have any problem, though I would certainly do your Denali portion of your trip first. Happy travels! :)
