We have done point to point bicycling in Alaska 3 years finishing at Arctic Circle and are returning this summer.
Wwe plan on train from Anchorage up to Denali (unless you can whistle stop at Cantwell). We then would cycle the Denali Highway to Valdez. We would then ferry over and do some cycling on Pennisula from Seward or Whittier to Anchorage.
T\An option would be to come down Parks Highway to Glenn to Valdez. We are looking for best experience, scenary and wildlife not just the ';easiest';. Comments? You don%26#39;t have to be a biyclist!
I am also interested in knowing if there could be a whistle stop in Cantwell. Not to important but I might consider it rather then ending train trip in Denal Natinal Park. Thanks for you opinions and help.
Bicycling and ? Whistle stops on Alaska Railroad?
If you bicycled to the Arctic Circle, then the gravel Denali highway will hold no surprises other than different and also spectacular scenery. I definitely recommend the Denali over the Parks Highway with all its pavement and high speed traffic.
I am also a biker but have biked mostly in Europe, where they respect bicyclists on the road.
Check the Alaska Railroad web pages to see when they offer the whistle stop service or regular stops at Cantwell. The only sad part is you will miss the spectacular bike through the Alaska Range from Delta to Paxson. It is really great.
The Valdez ferry takes you to Whittier, which is an easy to forget place. Head off to your next destination, be it Seward (and take the train back to Anchorage for another spectacular view) or directly to Anchorage along the Turnagain inlet. By the way, if you have time to bike to Seward, you can take the train back to Girdwood and then bike the spectacular route to Anchorage, if time allows. That would be ideal. The bike from Whittier/Girdwood to Anchorage should be rich in wildlife.

Bicycling and ? Whistle stops on Alaska Railroad?
Thank you for the reply from SInce71.
As I do the early planning for this trip I am noting two disappointments. The cancelation of any ferry service to Seward was one. I guess we were fortunate to get a ferry into Hyder several years back before it was cancelled.
The cancellation of the rail shuttle from Whittier to Portage will likely make us hitch hike. I expect some good Alaskan with a pickup or visitor will help us out there.
