I am thinking of coming to Anchorage in mid-Februrary or early March. What is the weather like? Is there public transportation that operates in winter? I am hoping to see the Idiolrod Dog Race and anything else going on there.
I need advice...
Anchorage in February
Hi, the weather is usually sunny and ';mild'; meaning highs in the 20%26#39;s and about 5-10 degrees at night. The sun is really warm and I often dress in layers of a silk turtle neck, a warm sweater and a medium weight jacket with a zip out liner for outdoor stuff like watching the start of the Iditarod. You will need gloves and a hat just in case it gets colder - it can - and will want boots no matter what because feet get cold standing around, wet if there is slush - not uncommon. Check out the Iditarod web site for details of the race this year as well as the State tourism website -
iditarod.com and state.ak.us and go to the visitor%26#39;s link
Also you can attend events of our winter ';carnival'; - Fur Rendezvous or as it is known locally - fur rondy - the website for that is
furrondy.net
Public transportation operates all year but it is not as frequent or wide spread as the systems in the hometowns of many visitors. You will need to take taxis at least some of the time if you stay off the major routes or late at night.
Hope this helps you to start your planning - just post if you need further information. I would not wait too much longer to book your hotel as they are filling up now for the rondy/iditarod time frame.
