anchorage and surrounding area

We have dedided that on June 17 we will fly into Anchorage. Our cruise leaves from Whittier on the 20th. So basically we will have all Mon, Tues and most of the day Wed to enjoy the area. We are going to rent a car. Should we book a room or b%26amp;b around Anc and just go out from there everyday or should we go to different towns and spend one somewhere Monday night, another place Tuesday night. Our ship leave from Whittier so i was thinking about staying around there somewhere but i think i will be cheaper to take the car back to Anc and take the shuttle to Whittier. Also do you think i shoudl stay in a b7b or a hotel. Would i need to prebook the places if i stay outside Anc or just get a place where we end up? I know i ask alot but i thank you graciously. I am flying blind in this.

You are going at the perfect time of year. I lived in Alaska for 15 years, and am a chronic tourist, so perhaps I can help. Whittier is (in my opinion)a dud, the only thing I would suggest there is a wildlife cruise, which you might do before you leave on Wednesday ( these are fantastic)and definitely stop by the Portage visitors center. Also, stop in Girdwood and ride the Tram at Alyeska resort, and have lunch at the top. The location you stay in will depend on your interests, there is just too much to see and do in this area. Anchorage is a good base, For scenic beauty nearby Eagle River is also a great place to be. I would do the B+B as Alaskans are so friendly and helpful, most are also tourist types so they will be able to help you. You should reserve in advance, it is a busy place this time of year. If you post your interests, I can be more helpful.

Hi to you both and welcome to the forum! the advice above is great! You can spend at least a full day right in Anchorage seeing the Native Cultural Center - lots of exhibits, performances and craftsmen/women doing fascinating arts and crafts. Another place in town is the Museum of Art and History. If you like walking/hiking, there are great walkshikes including at the Eagle River Nature Center - to get to the Center you do need a car. There are many trips for a day around Anchorage - Portage, the wild animal place near Portage, Alyeska are on the way from Whittier as you already know. The wildlife cruise is nearly a must do.

Here%26#39;s your problem - many hotels are already booked for that period of time so I would assume are the B%26amp;B%26#39;s. Get started now getting your hotel or B%26amp;B arranged. There are many listed here on TA.

Post any questions you may have and we will all be glad to assist!

Hi, no, I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;ve done anything on the liver support board so it must be someone else. My name comes from the Irish Wolfhound I had at the time I needed to think up an e-mail name. Not very creative as she was stretched out on the couch and I just looked over and said kileysmom! Glad we%26#39;ve been helpful and please don%26#39;t hesitate to post further when you get to a point where you need more input.
