Hi Dianne: Well, while I think the train is a lovely trip, it is limiting on where you can go, etc - you just won%26#39;t have the flexibility like you would with your own vehicle. Maybe consider it for some portions of your trip, esp. if you have 2 weeks. Here is the main website - I would book direct rather than thru a tour company. www.alaskarailroad.com
I would continue to research here on the forum - check out various it routes/itineraries, etc. We%26#39;ll all try to help you! :)

I LOVED the train when I was there this past summer. We took the trip from Anchorage to Seward, which we were told is the most beautiful stretch of track on the system.
I recommend taking a couple of days in Seward, we did 2 days, and went out on one of the Kenai Fjords Tours National Park Tour. It was wonderful - if you stay the night you can take the 3PM trip, and you are the only boat on the water. It was astounding. We also went to the SeaLife Center, and really enjoyed that. There are also some local kayak companies in the area that we looked at.
If you are just going for a day trip, I would still recommend taking the glacier cruise. Kenai Fjords Tours was a wonderful experience for us, and I know that they have one of those National Park Tours that coencides with the train schedule.
Good advice you are getting, I am happy to say! The trip by train to Seward is very well worth it, and can be combined with a bus trip back or perhaps mini-bus, both along the road.
The trip to Fairbanks by train takes about 12 hours, not counting any time you chose to stop at Denali Park, which is another highlight of any trip to Alaska. Allow two nights minimum so you can have a full day for the trip into the park. Take the shuttle bus into Fish Creek or Eielson Visitor Center and return for an exposure to wildlife concentrations you will see no where else.
Along with the two train trips you can rent cars in Anchorage and Fairbanks to gain the flexibility to see the highlights around each of these centers.
The alternative is to drive to Fairbanks rather than take the train. When I do this I like to make a round trip going up the ';new'; Parks highway and coming down the historic Richardson Highway.
Keep us informed as you develop your plans so we can offer other specific suggestions.

The train is awesome! Book through the railroad itself and stay away from tour companies.
Lots to do In Seward and worth spending a couple days here.
