going to Anchorage feb 1 to 5th to see gopher hockey games

Hello from a former Minnesotan. You will find many Golden Gopher fans here. You are coming to the right place for activities in the winter.

I can suggest many things to do with your 9 year old. You can use Anchorage as your base hotel and take easy side trips out from there. There is a mall downtown Anchorage and it might be a good place to hotel base. I can think of many hotels, motels, inns and B%26amp;Bs. If you have a preference, let us know. Otherwise, to begin there is a Marriott, Hilton, Hotel Captain Cook for starters. I would stay away from The Westmark, only because they seem to have thin walls and you can hear all the street noise. Other than that, it is a very nice hotel.

Activities: Ice Skating, Dimond Center Ice Chalet located inside the Dimond Center mall not only has ice skating, but a bowling alley and movie theatre. There are many outside skating rinks as well.

Skiing: Alyeska Ski Resort, Alpenglow Arctic Valley and Hilltop Ski Area. All close enough to Anchorage. Dog Sledding: Chugach Express Dog and Sled Team in Girdwood, Plettner Dog Sled Kennel. You can ride with the race team. Flightseeing: a number of tour companies available, Snowshoeing: Eagle River Nature Center (snowshoes provided) about 25 miles from downtown Anchorage located in Eagle River. Sledding: about a dozen places in Anchorage alone, but you%26#39;ll have to purchase something to sled with. Guided Snowmobiling: in Girdwood and others. Various places and prices, but you can ride up in the mountains and through and around the glaciers. Here is a start. I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll run out of activities while you are here. If you want specific websites, I can provide them. Good luck Gophers!

thanks for the help, any suggestions would be great..

I was thinking about a fishing or snowmobling trip a couple of days before the weekend.

Here%26#39;s some snowmobiling information. I%26#39;ve heard both are good. www.snowmobile-alaska.com, www.snowtours.net.

Fishing. As far as guided fishing goes, I would probably suggest going out to the Mat-su valley which is about 50 miles north of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway. Try www.fish4salmon.com. If you want the big halibut I%26#39;m pretty sure you have to go at least as far as Soldotna (4.5 hrs) on the Kenai Peninsula, but the only tour company I am familar with is www.homerfishing.com., located in Homer about 6 hours from Anchorage. The thing that would concern me being you don%26#39;t live here is knowing the highway conditions. There are avalanche areas in the Kenai Peninsula, so you need to understand that before venturing out.

There are alot of lakes around, but I don%26#39;t know whether you can find someone right there in Anchorage. I am just not familiar with that area enough.

I%26#39;ve heard the Dimond Center Hotel is good even though it is in a congested area and near the mall. There have been many recommendations. I%26#39;ve only stayed downtown at those hotels mentioned before.

Don%26#39;t hesitate to keep asking questions. If I think of anything else, I will post again.

A former Minnesotan.

When we stay in Anchorage we stay at the Voyager. It is across the street from the Captain Cook. They only have 40 rooms and each is a suite in itself and very good pricewise. Be sure to meet Mister Muffin, the owner%26#39;s dog. He will follow you into the elevator. However, the last we saw of Mister Muffin was about three years ago and may be dead by now. He was very old at the time.

Also for eating try the Glacier Brew House. It is always crowded, and even in the middle of the winter. Obviously, it is not a tourist trap.

I see one of our posters (from Wasilla) is formerly from Minnesota. Now I know why you relocated to Alaska. It is warmer. A couple of winters ago we flew into Fairbanks to take the train to Anchorage. It was below zero outslide and those Fairbanks types drive their cars right down the middle of the river. Yes, we were just as nuts to be walking out there on the ice. We had forgot to put on our longjohns. We we arrived in Anchorage the temperture shot up into the 40s. It was 27 in Chicago at the time.

Hi, any fishing would be ice fishing and not for salmon or halibut! Probably better to skip it, frankly. Do you mean x-country skiing or downhill? We also have an indoor water park and our zoo (small but pleasant) is open all year - a 9 year old may get a kick out of the polar bears etc. There are very few hotels that would be more than 15 minutes from the arena where the games are played unless you drive it during the peak of rush hour so it%26#39;s probably more important to pick a hotel that meets your needs. Assuming there%26#39;s a game every day you are here, it might be a bit much to try to go very far from town and get back in time to get to the game. If you do have a day without a game, you might consider driving to Girdwood where you can do lots of different things including both downhill and x-country skiing. The drive is considered one of the ten most beautiful so that%26#39;s another plus. However, it takes about an hour from town as the road is two lane most of the way (about 45 miles)and winding along the water so passing is not easy. All the info posted so far should help you to get into planning - post as you go if you have questions. Have a great trip!

aprowl, this post is for you. It may answer some of your similar inquiries you posted last night.
