ranger led discovery hikes - can I sign up now?

My husband and I usually love ranger led hikes in national parks, and would like to sign up for one of these hikes in advance. Does anyone know if this is possible? If we have to wait until we arrive, how can we know now which shuttle buses to sign up for? (We will be camping at Savage River nights of June 24th-27.

Make all reservations for Alaska as far in advance as you can, they fill up quick. If you have time, stop in the Mat-Su Valley (Wasilla, Palmer). The mountains are beautiful. I hope you enjoy your trip up here. :)

Hi there! I just checked the official site - you must sign up at the Visitor center 1-2 days prior to the hike. Here is the specific site for this info: nps.gov/dena/…hikes

All other general info is at www.nps.gov/dena

I would book your shuttle and work around that as far as hikes go. Also check out the day hikes under activities, as these would offer lots of you as well.

Good luck and have a great time! :)

I don%26#39;t know if this is relevant to this post, but here in Skagway there is always room on the Ranger walks, and they are free and very informative! Just go in to the NPS building at Second %26amp; Broadway and they will take care of you. DD

Just heard from them as it happens

Discovery Hikes work in this way: Each day there is either one or two hikes. Every hike is rated as either ';moderate'; (less than 1,000%26#39; elevation gain) or ';strenuous'; (potentially more than 1,000%26#39; elevation gain, or otherwise difficult terrain); up to 11 people may sign up for a given hike; sign-up is limited to two days in advance at most (i.e., you%26#39;ll have to come to the Denali Visitor Center upon arrival and sign up with us at that time for either the next day, or for two days from when you come into the Visitor Center); and you do not need to worry about reserving bus seats in advance ~ there is a special bus dedicated each day to the Discovery Hike(s), and only the 11 (or 22, when there are 2 hikes) people may get on that bus. After signing up with us at the Visitor Center, we provide you with a piece of paper that indicates that you are among the 11 people who may go on a given hike; with that piece of paper, you must purchase your bus ticket at another building, called the Wilderness Access Center.

The start date is a bit nebulous at this point in time. We are hoping to begin everything (hikes, programs, full Visitor Center hours) a week or two earlier than we have in the past; however, we will not know until much later in the winter, or early spring, if we will be able to accomplish this goal. So, feel free to check back with us in perhaps April, and we will hopefully have a more complete answer for you.

Is there a fee for the hikes? We will be at Tekalinka 5 days and Savage River 5 days - would we be able to join them from either campground?

Yes, there is a fee which includes a bus transportation. Did you mean Teklanika?

Yes, Teklanika - my fingers didn%26#39;t type what I was thinking.
