We are travelling to Alaska on our first trip, and want to experience glaciers;bears;the people and beautiful scenery. We are independent travellers and dont want to travel on huge cruise ships.
Would appreciate ideas for an itinerary.
Prior to Alaska we are visiting the Rockies and Vancouver Island.
should we return to Vancouver to travel to Alaska or take the ferry from Port Hardy?
We have an itinerary provided by a Travel Agent, but to me it appears to
try and cover too much in such a short time.
We will be travelling approx 13th June 2006.
11 Days AlaskaFirst of all, I presume that you meant June of 07, and then you will be coming at a very nice time of year. It is usually quite mild weather in June except that you should expect more rain on our coastline than you are used to at home, with the small exception of our town, which happens to be in a rain shadow.
I am also going to presume that you will have transportation to the north end of Vancouver Island, where you catch the ferry at Port Hardy. I have used that route several times, years ago, and it is a beautiful way to start your ferry travels. This ferry will take you into Prince Rupert where you can catch the Alaskan ferry and come all of the way up to Skagway with several stops along the way. The only problem with this route for most people without cars, is how to get from Vancouver to the north end of the Island. As far as I know, there is no public transportation to Port Hardy, so unless you have that means it can cause a glitch in that route! But, don%26#39;t despair. If your Vancouver Island travels end up on the south end of the Island, you can get transportation over to Bellingham, Washington, where you can catch the Alaskan Ferry out of there and end up on the same route!
If this sounds a bit convoluted come find me and I will explain the ';ferry tales'; over a libation!?! There isn%26#39;t enough space here for that one!?! Suffice to say that they are both quite adequate means of transportation and I think that you all will enjoy yourselves whichever way you come!
I hope that this helps and feel free to come back with more specifics and I will try to help. DD
