In doing a lot of research and querying about the Anchorage hotels (including comparing rates), my sense is that Embassy Suites would be our best bet. I%26#39;m hoping, though, that people can answer the question about how quiet the hotel is likely to be. I know, of course, that one can%26#39;t know how quiet one%26#39;s neighbors will be. But I%26#39;m concerned that the hotel is only 4 stories high and that photos show it looking out on a busy street (or parking lot). Are the windows insulated? Are the walls between rooms good and thick? In short, is this a good hotel choice for people for whom rest and quiet are main priorities? Thanks ever so much.
specific question about Embassy Suites Anchorage
Wanted to add that the choice seems to be between Embassy Suites and Captain Cook. Captain Cook seems to have great views and to have better chance (on higher floors) for quiet, is that correct? ES seems to be the better bet for roominess and more up-to-date look and comforts, is that correct? Rates are about the same (high!) How far are they from each other? (ES picks up from airport--a plus.)
specific question about Embassy Suites Anchorage
If I was choosing between those two, I%26#39;d choose the Captain Cook. The CC is downtown, so you%26#39;d already be close to a lot more attractions, it has a couple nice restaurants right in the hotel if you%26#39;re tired and don%26#39;t feel like going out. I think I read in another thread that you are only staying one night in between other activites? Is that right?
I think you should see if you can get an upper floor on the Captain Cook. You might as well get a nice view if you are going to spend that kind of money. :)Decide if you want a mountain or water view and ask the reservations desk for the one you%26#39;d prefer. I also suggest going to the Crow%26#39;s Nest at the top of the Captain Cook if you%26#39;re in the mood for a very nice meal (a tad pricey at $35 for an entree). If that sounds good, you might want to make a reservation for that, too, when you book your room.
Go to the Captain Cook%26#39;s web site (www.captaincook.com) to see some of their specials before booking, too. It looks like they have some nice deals. If they don%26#39;t offer a shuttle, the trip from the airport by cab would be less than $20.
Hi-- and thanks. Actually we%26#39;ll be staying 2 nights (hoping we won%26#39;t be too jet-lagged to have a wonderful full day in Anchorage or environs before our cruise embarks in Seward).
Because we%26#39;re not terrific sleepers even in best of circumstances (we%26#39;re oldsters), I%26#39;m hoping very much that we%26#39;ll make the right hotel choice-- one that%26#39;ll best enable us to get two good nights%26#39; sleep. Capt Cook is rated way down on the hotel section of TA, and ES (and Homewood Suites) seem to get mainly raves. I wonder what accounts for the big discrepancy. (And virtually no one ever comments on how quiet a hotel is-- to us, the single most important factor-- after cleanliness of course-- by far.)

Have you checked how many posts each of the reviewers has? I routinely ignore any hotel reviews by posters with just a couple of posts. Call me skeptical, that is fine. My biggest wish for TA is to not allow anyone to post hotel reviews until they have something like 10 or 25 other posts.

I can%26#39;t comment on the Capt Cook but we are considering a night at the Embassy Suites in Aug. Mainly because every time I%26#39;ve stayed in one it was a wonderful experience. All rooms I%26#39;ve ever been in had a living room between the bedroom %26amp; the lobby so you never heard anything from the rest of the hotel in the bedroom. Can%26#39;t comment on if you%26#39;ll hear something outside. Last time we stayed in busy Atlanta on the 2nd floor and had no noise problems but that is probably dependent on the area. To me, for the price it%26#39;s worth having the made to order breakfast in the a.m. That%26#39;s worth a good $10 or so pp which helps us deal with the price. :) If you have AAA, you can log into their website and it will be the least expensive quoted price. Even better than the ';best available'; price.
I will check out the Capt Cook though beore we make any final decisions.
