we are taking a cruise from Ancorage in July they have a train trip to denali with a stay over night and trip back but $$$$ any thoughts on getting there and back, No car rental please

how to get DenaliWell, to be honest, I think the best way to get to Denali is to rent a car, so that you have flexibility - and it usually saves you $$ because you can pick lodging that isn%26#39;t limited to the Denali entrance area.
Howver, you can just take the train as a passenger - don%26#39;t do a pkg tour that costs a bunch. You can also take a bus . . . but all these limit you to stay in the entrancea area, where most hotels are expensive. Not sure if that is an issue for you. Do take the shuttle bus into the Park - it is the best deal around. :)
how to get DenaliAlso, a trip to Denali requires two nights, as one entire taken is required for the bus into the park (without that bus trip there%26#39;s really no point going to Denali).
I see that the fare from Anchorage to Denali and back is $234, while the package with 2 nights at the Princess is $669. There are certainly cheaper hotel options even if you%26#39;re limited to the park gates area.
SanDiegoretired - are you looking to go up on a shuttle or bus perhaps or do you want to go on the train? There appear to be some threads under the Anchorage forum of ';transfer'; services that could be the info you are looking for.
If you go to Denali it would be great to spend some time there and go into the Park - not have to come back right away. That would be a lot of time (8 hours each day) to spend on the train. It is scenic though - and nice to not have to worry about driving.
You should also check the coupon books - Northern Lights and TourSaver. I believe one of them has 2 for 1 coupons for train travel between Anchorage and Denali.
Thanks for your thoughts and ideas

The coupons are for non-peak times in the Northern Lights Coupon book... so July would not qualify, just FYI.
There are some good 50th Anniversary of Statehood specials online right now - for purchase before March 31!
