Bear tours

Where is the best place to see bears in early August? Anan Creek? or somewhere else?

Bear tours

I have only been to Anan Creek, so can really only speak for that area, which is great in early August! I went on Aug. 12 in 2006 %26amp; saw approximately 15 black bears. They were really feasting - fighting over the best fishing spot %26amp; eating lots of salmon. Traitor%26#39;s Cove, Hyder, Alaska and Neets Bay are all bear viewing sites around Ketchikan but I%26#39;ve heard they can be more hit %26amp; miss.

Bear tours

ProMech Air has a good tour out of Ketchikan to see the black bears feeding. Check with them. They fly out in float planes and then van up to the bear stations. Anan Creek out of Wrangell is more famous, but this one is very good as well. Bears are numerous in Southeast Alaska, as are bald eagles. Good photo ops.

If you are going to be in Ketchikan, then Herring Cove is good. Not sure where Anan Creek is though.

is there a time of day that is best to see bears feeding on the fish run at Margaret Creek Falls?

thanks

can you tell me what time of day is best to see the bears feeding on fish, thanks martin99055

You dont say where you are going to be?

Katmai National Park and Brooks Camp there are just amazing! I was there end of June, a bit early but still plenty of bears. It entirely depends on when the salmon are running and I heard July is better but if the salmon are late running early August may well be good. They were late last year.

Great Travels!!

As was mentioned, it would really help us if you told us where you are going to be - which cities, on a cruise or a land tour, etc.

Anan Creek is best but if you are going to be in Wrangell, you will get much more viewing time than if you do a fly-in from Ketchikan for example (and cheaper). I would recommend spending a night at the Anan Bay cabin if possible - that will more than double your viewing time, and you will be the ONLY ones at the observatory from 4-6pm the first night and from 8am-10am the next morning. Just an incredible experience.

As was also mentioned, Brooks is also great but you must fly in. I personally do not recommend a day trip to Brooks - very real possibility of a bear jam (i.e. not getting across the river for the best viewing), and early August can be iffy at Brooks anyway.

John

I agree re Brooks, you have to fly in and yes, we did get caught in a bear jam for three hours.

Good luck in whatever you plan to do.

I believe Margaret Creek is at Traitor%26#39;s Cove.

Hi

We have been to AnAn with Alaska Waters Tours, out of Wrangell. They have a website plus their office is in the lobby of the Stikine Inn in Wrangell.

You get to the AnAn area by boat, very comfortable and the scenery is breath-taking. You then hike a bit through some of the most beautiful forest, safely guided along the way by Alaska Waters%26#39; guides. Very knowledgeable and safety minded. Once we got to the bear area we were treated to the most amazing close-up bear viewing experience. Be sure to bring your camera!
