We arrive in Whitier at 7 a.m. on July 29 and our fight out of Anchorage is 8:50 p.m. Is it possible to get a flight to Katmai to see the bears and still make it back to catch our flight home?

Katmai is a long day trip from Anchorage so as was said, it is not possible.
If you only have the 12+ hours I strongly suggest one of several options:
1) a Prince William Sound glacier cruise after you get off your cruise ship. This probably won%26#39;t work unless you rent a car in Whittier to get back from there to Anchorage in time for your flight. Personally I would not recommend this option unless you really, really want to see glaciers up close.
2) rent a car in Whittier and drive to Anchorage. Probably $150-$200 for the day. But it allows you to stop at Portage Glacier visitor center, perhaps walk to Byron Glacier, see Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and maybe stop in Girdwood on your way to Anchorage. A very worthwhile drive
3) take something like the Alaska Leopard comedy tour which would make some stops along the way.
You had the right idea of trying to use your short time wisely. You just need to look at other options.
