My wife and I will be in Ketchikan for 8 hours in May. Any suggestions on what to do that early in the cruise season? We are in OK shape and like to take photos. Thanks.
In Ketchikan 1st week of May for 8 hours
HI, me again
We did Ketchikan on our own.
We stayed on ship and had a late breakfast and let the rush of people get off and then we headed out, went right to the visitors center and got a walking map and headed to the Salmon creek area, took tons of pictures there, headed up the creek along neat wooden walkways and followed the signs to the hatchery and Totem pole museum.
We were the only ones at the hatchery and got a great private tour, just as we were finishing up a bus of cruise ship people arrived! So we missed the crowd
We then headed over to the totem poles and toured that place again on our own before the rush of people.
We then walked out and up the street towards the local homes and checked out the side streets and saw lots of totem poles in locals front yards
We walked around main street for a while then headed back to the ship.
Ketchikan is a steep town, lots of uphill climbing but we enjoyed it very much. It was a light rain all day but we had rain coats and water proof hiking boots.
I had gone online before our trip to Alaskas tourist sight and signed up for tour guides of Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. Lots of interesting and helpful stuff. We are into history and sightseeing more then shopping and found both Skagway and Ketchikan very easy to walk and do on our own.
