The guy that does the weekend travel show on our local radio station said this morning that Alaska was one of the destinations where excursions are heavily discounted or free. The tour operators must be having problems filling their tours. Is this info accurate?
free or discounted excursions

Most of our excursions here in Haines are booked through the cruise ships and the cruising industry is seeing a slow down in bookings (as most places in the country).....they seem to be consolidating the cruises and cancelling a few to make sure that each ship is fully booked....naturally that will effect the amount of times our local excursions are booked, but I have not heard of any disounts for these excursions and definitely not free....the tour operators still have expenses to meet (payroll, fuel costs, etc).....
Whether you are traveling to Alaska (or anywhere else) I believe that the most economical way to travel is to read up on everything possible in the areas you want to travel, study maps and tour books from your local library and be your own tour guide !!
free or discounted excursions
Actually there are a LOT of heavy discounts this year in every part of the tourism sector. As well as savings books such as Toursaver and Northern Lights (links at http://www.youralaskacruise.com/discounts.html), there are special Web sites set up specifically for discounted accommodations and excursions. The Alaska Railroad has one such site ( http://akrr.com/arrc280.html ) and the Tourism Dept has another even larger one, but it%26#39;s dead at the moment so I can%26#39;t give you the URL.

The other Alaska government site for discounts (though the site is still dead this morning - as is the main Alaska Tourism site) is http://www.alaskashottestdeals.com/
