Nice walk on the beach and ';the duck.';

Hello Friends!

I would like to have some recommendations of walks that we could do around town, along the beach (would like to see some tidepools and take pictures of the sunflowers starfish), and maybe something in the woods. We are in town for 6 hours. This will be June 25th. I say the date because of high tide and low tide.

Also my husband would like to take the ';duck'; around town. Yes? No? Other ideas?

Last question-can you recommend a shop that would have stickers or diecuts anything for the scrapbook that is all about Ketchikan.

Oh and I love to take pictures of flowers, so if there is a trail with really beautiful flowers that would be great too.

Thanks in advance,

Debbie

Ketchikan has an excellent walking tour. Maps available at the visitor center near the dock.

Also, you might find these links of interest:

I haven%26#39;t heard much in the way of good reviews about the Duck tour.

My recommendation would be to take the ';bike path'; south of town from downtown...ask anyone...it starts by the Coast Guard base...and walk down to the beaches where you see the stairs OR take the bus from the library to Rotary Beach. It is on another bike path and you can walk and walk or just enjoy the beach. There are restroom facilities at the beach, too.

I have taken the Duck tour in Seattle, DC and Ketchikan and ours is similar, silly good fun. My family loves it. As far as scrapbook supplies, go to TBC (Tongass Business Center) across from the library. They go to all the scrapbook shows and have a great sellection. I also like ';Rainforest Crafts'; in the West End, but that won%26#39;t be near the cruise ship docks..It%26#39;s about a mile and half north of the docks.

As far as flowers go, our many local gardens (just wander around the neighborhoods above downtown) would be your best bet or City Park, about a ten minute walk down Park Avenue from the library. Wildflowers are way up high in the mountains and all day hikes for the most part. June can be a little cool and a lot of our flowers are not in full bloom by then and there is still snow on the mountain, but we do get flowers for five months of the year regardless.

Dear Rainbirdreader,

Thank you for the wonderful information! Will I have a chance of seeing the sunflower starfish at Rotary Beach? Are there tide pools there? How far is is to Rotary beach from the cruise ship dock? How much time should the ';walking tour'; of Ketchikan take?

Thank you,

Debbie

I%26#39;m afraid I can%26#39;t tell you the types of starfish at Rotary Beach, only that we never fail to seem some or lots there. Yes, there are tidepools all over the place. The beach is about a five mile drive from the docks, hence my advice to take the bus. Your walking tour can take five minutes or five hours. Just head away from downtown and up into the hills above the city where older homes and gardens are. You will see the many, many houses dotting the hillside from your cruise ship. You can%26#39;t get lost because when it is time to turn back, just head downhill toward the docks. The city is insanely simple to navigate. Mountain on one side, water on the other, about seven blocks that traverse the side of the mountain and one main road. Easy peasy.
