I%26#39;ll be in AK in August, getting off a cruise in Seward. We%26#39;re hanging out in Seward for 3 nights then the goal is to get to Kodiak (a friend who lived there while stationed sold me on how much I%26#39;d love it!) for a few nights.
My question is, what is the best way to get to Kodiak? She reccomended the ferry, which seems to leave out of Homer - I didn%26#39;t see an option to take the ferry from Seward. If that%26#39;s the case, any reccomendations re: how to get from Seward to Homer that doesn%26#39;t involve renting a car? As far as I can tell the railroad doesn%26#39;t go to Homer but there might be a bus that runs.
All of this seems a little convoluted when the goal is just to go Seward to Kodiak, which is totally fine if that%26#39;s the way to do it. But I%26#39;m wondering whether anyone with more AK experience than myself can reccomend a better way a) to get straight to Kodiak from Seward or b) the best way (speed wise) to get from Seward to Homer to Kodiak.
Thanks in advance for any ideas!
Getting to Kodiak from Seward?
Hi. The only way to get from Seward to Homer without renting a car is by bus: http://thestageline.net/
No trains or planes between those two towns (well, unless you chartered a private plane, and that%26#39;s expensive!)
I believe the fastest way to get to Kodiak would be to skip Homer and go from Seward to Anchorage (train, bus), then take a plane to Kodiak.
Getting to Kodiak from Seward?
You want to check the ferry schedule too (ferryalaska.com) to see how often the ferry runs from Homer to Kodiak and back. It may end up taking longer just to get to Kodiak and back by going through Homer then taking the ferry there and back (then another bus from Homer to Anchorage) than you would actually be in Kodiak.
What exactly do you want to do when there? Just to go there on a friend%26#39;s recommendation is nice, but without a plan of what you want to do/see you might be disappointed.

Thanks for the reponses. Right now the plan was to do the overnight ferry from Homer to Kodiak (to minimize ';lost'; time) with an indoor cabin, then fly to ANC when done instead of ferrying back and then going overland to ANC. To answer, gist is to have low key vacation. Do some hiking, see a bit of the Russian influence (old churches), go tidepooling, see bears if we can pony up the cash for a bear watching tour. Open to other reccomendations; we%26#39;re from FLA so at the mercy of people we know and the InterWebs to figure out how to spend our honeymoon up in AK!
You might be able to get a flight to Kodiak from Seward... try Era Aviation (I think they have flights that would match you up). You could also try chartering a small float plane.
No flights from Seward. You%26#39;d still have to get to Homer or Kenai and then you would be routed back through Anchorage and then on to Kodiak, which would cost you about twice as much as a direct flight from Anchorage.
The ferry is a nice trip if you have the time and can find a schedule that accomodates your travel. You might see whales and you will pass all the northern islands on your way into Kodiak.
