What part of town will you be working in? What time of year will you be here? Public transportation isn%26#39;t the best. Do you plan to buy a car? Anchorage is very spread out. You might be better trying to get a housesitting arrangement - depending on the time of year. Don%26#39;t take an apartment in Mt. View area. Otherwise, you should be okay generally. Reply with more information and we%26#39;ll see what we can do to give you better advice.

VA Hospital.
april-june.
will be hiring a car.
thanks for any help.
The VA hospital is between the downtown area and the east side. There are a number of apartments in the area but getting one for such a short term may be difficult. Additionally, that is when most Alaskans are returning from being ';outside'; (means outside the state) for the winter so a housesit may be difficult.
I would suggest that you start looking in the classifieds advertisements in the Anchorage Daily News - www.adn.com - and look at the furnished apartments. You might also try your contact at the hospital as they must have some leads on short term rentals.
Get a map online and don%26#39;t be in the area north of the Glenn Highway - that%26#39;s Mt. View - lots of drugs/gang stuff. Spenard is another area that can be a bit dodgy but has areas that are quite nice. Other areas may be a bit rough but it%26#39;s in pockets and rather street by street. We have very little up market apartment living here - most of what there was became condos years ago and the rest is long term lease usually. When you look at the ads, look for a company called Weidner as they seem to have a lot of apartments.
You might also try contacting any of the property management firms as they might have something available in between long term tenants.
Hope this helps and gives you some starting information. Just post as you go and we%26#39;ll be glad to give you whateve other information you might need. Good luck!
Well,
We have men women and babies living successfully all around town, but I would also suggest somewhere south of 15th Ave (Debar is its other name). If you locate something around the University area or hospital area it would be ideal. You have a lot of green area with trails and depending upon distance you could have a beautiful walk or bike ride to work.
As an alternative or backup, you can locate the VA hospital on the map and explore areas along the bus routes.
